Sciatica Q & A
What is sciatica?
In the lower part of your back is the sciatic nerve, the large nerve in your body. It provides sensations in your buttocks, hips, and legs.
When there’s too much pressure on this nerve, it can lead to persistent numbness and tingling in the areas the nerve travels. You can also experience shock-like pain in your lower back when you move. This type of pain and related symptoms are known as sciatica.
Sciatica pain may start as mild and occasional, but without the proper care, you can experience a worsening of your symptoms that lead to loss of mobility and reduced quality of life.
What causes sciatica?
You may be at increased risk for sciatica as you get older and degenerative changes occur in your spine. Pressure on your sciatic nerve can originate from:
- Obesity
- Bone spurs
- Herniated disc
- Spinal stenosis
You may also be at a higher risk for sciatica if you work in a job that requires you to sit for long periods or if you have diabetes, a disease that can damage your sciatic nerve when you’re your blood sugar levels are too high.
How is sciatica treated?
The primary goals of treating sciatica are to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve and prevent permanent nerve damage.
To accomplish this, Dr. Marinaro uses a variety of integrative chiropractic manipulation techniques to realign your spine and alleviate pressure on your sciatic nerve. In addition to chiropractic care, he may recommend other available holistic therapies to relieve existing symptoms and prevent a worsening of your pain.
These therapies may include acupuncture and massage therapy to relax tense muscles and improve your overall blood circulation. Dr. Marinaro can also recommend rehabilitative exercises and specific stretches to improve the health of your lower spine and the muscles that support it.
To optimize the results of your sciatica treatments, Dr. Marinaro may suggest regular chiropractic adjustments and massages. He offers the convenience of both in-office visits and concierge-style, mobile services that come to you. You can continue with your regular care from the comfort of your own home without having to travel to the office.
